For years Joomla! community only had to deal with version 1.0.x and 1.5.x. Even though there were regular updates and new features, they had always stayed in the same version series. That was all changed since the release of Joomla! 1.6.
Joomla! developers worked on Joomla! 1.6 for 3 years. Now only half a year after Joomla! community received version 1.6, the first beta release of Joomla! 1.7 has been out of the door for testing.

Joomla! 1.6 release now gets its first and major update. On March 7th Joomla! 1.6.1 was announced, which includes fiexes for 12 security and 206 other issues. This is a security release, so you should apply the update to you Joomla! 1.6 installations as soon as possible. As usual please backup your sites and perform adequate tests before updating your production sites.

Year 2011 is the year of Joomla! 1.6. Only 10 days into the new year, Joomla! Team gave everyone in the Joomla! community a rather wonderful New Year gift - the release of Joomla! 1.6 Stable. You can now head for http://www.joomla.org/16/ to download or experience the newest version of Joomla!

As Year 2011 arrived with birds fallen from sky and fish died in the river, Joomla! Community is feeling assured that we have Joomla! 1.6 already in the Release Candidate phase. Hopefully Joomla! 1.6 will reach stable release status before the end of the world.
Two weeks before the end of year 2010 Joomla! Development Team brought Joomla! 1.6 out of the beta stage and released the first Release Candidate version. There is no more High or Medium High issues in the tracker, and security audit will be performed on Joomla! 1.6 codes.
This RC1 version is still for evaluation purpose. Joomla! Team recommends against using it on production servers. However, with Joomla! 1.6 out of beta, it may be time for Joomla! users to start building sites with it to get some hand-on experiences. See the official announcement.

Well, it's getting there, but Joomla! 1.6 is still in beta. Joomla! 1.6 Beta 15 was released on Nov. 29, 2010. For this 15th iteration of beta release, Joomla! team resolved 84 issues in the tracker, and closed additional 33 issues. To get to Release Candidate status there are 4 remaining issues need to be addressed. The next release is expected to be the 1st Release Candidate unless certain major issues are discovered, and will be out on Dec. 13, 2010. It will certainly be a nice gift to Joomla! community for this holiday season. The current beta release can be download at the official Beta 15 download page.
